There's more in my heart than I can possibly express, but this I can say:

Thank you for your prayers.

Chapter Six

Prepare for Departure

The Louis D. Traurig Transitional Living Center is located on the Gaylord grounds and visible from many of the hospital windows. Some with "acquired brain injuries" (Gaylord's term; it includes traumatic brain injuries like mine) reside there after they've recovered to the point they don't need the full-time, one-on-one supervision they receive as an inpatient in the hospital. They are medically stable and can get around by themselves (even if it's in a wheelchair or with a walker), as they will in the outside world— into which, as the word transitional implies, they will soon enter. Traurig's goal is to help brain-injured patients regain the basic skills of independent living and to restore them to the highest level of achievement possible. The availability of such a transitional living center was an important factor in my family's decision to send me to Gaylord.
